hello all,

i understand most people on this site dont do any sea fishing but there is a Parliamentary vote on Monday which needs the support of all anglers.

it is hoped to add an issue to give the MP's a way out of having to make, what they feel are tough decisions, to declare areas nature reserves and protect wildlife!

obviously that decision would conflict with their "behind the scenes business activities" (or is that me being too cynical again!? Rolling Eyes

) so they are not prepared to do it but the amendment to the Bill relieves them of this responsibility and gives it to people who actually give a sh!t.

it only takes a few minutes to copy and paste a standard letter onto an online form and fill your details in and it could help with the preservation of our inshore fisheries.

if you only fish freshwater dont think this doesn't affect you, because it does... the lack of inshore fish are forcing sea birds such as cormorants inland where they do a lot of damage to bait fish and ultimately the predators. i also feel we all, as anglers, need to start coming together and drawing a line in the sand (pardon the pun!).. it seems to me with the advancement of the Angling Trust we are in the best position for years to actually do something to protect our sport.

UK Marine Bill - quick before Monday!

On Monday 26th October 2009, the UK Marine and Coastal Access Bill reaches Report Stage in parliamentary debate. For once, its a piece of **** to fill out an online form to your MP to support an ammendment on the Bill to ensure future marine reserves are fully protected, thus ensuring (hopefully!) stable protected marine habitats that can support the environments of those fish we like to catch.

As I said, its really simple - click this link and a copy and a paste or two later and its nice and easy to help the Future of Fishing.

Have already done this, our lads project at school was "sustainable fishing and the undersea environment" this was the first site we found

Nice one Marc.
Ive done this.

Jerry I feel your pain I was confused to to start with but it's much easier than it looks.

*Go to the link as supplied by Marc.
*On there you'll see a suggested letter to your MP, highlight this letter & select copy (Right click on your mouse will bring up this option)
*Next go to the Friends of the earth link & there is a section where you enter your postcode to bring up the name of your local MP.
* Select Email this MP
* Paste the previously copied text & enter the name of your MP at the top & fill in your name at the bottom & then your name again & address & field at the bottom.
* Select send email .........
And dadaa Bobs your uncle & fannies your aunt!
Hope I've got that right & hope it helps!

That is if your Mp has an email address! Aparently mine doesnt - obviously can't afford one now he can't fiddle his expenses! I've had to print the letter out and post it. As there is a postal strike i don't know if and when it will get there.

hi gerry; Robs post is correct but it might help if i post a copy of the letter, which might make the whole thing easier.

use the same process for finding the email address of your local MP (if they have one!) but paste this into it as the letter.. you just need to add the MP's and your names..

Re: Amendment 3 to Report Stage of Marine and Coastal Access Bill

I am emailing you because the imminent postal strike would not allow me to
write you a formal letter and am asking for your support for Amendment 3
tabled by Katy Clark MP to the Report Stage of the Marine and Coastal Access
Bill on Monday 26th October in the House of Commons. Amendment 3 relates to
Clause 117 of the Bill, and reads:

Clause 117 : Grounds for the designation of MCZs (Amendment in bold)

(1) The appropriate authority may make an order under section 116 if it
thinks that it is desirable to do so for the purpose of conserving -

(a) marine flora and fauna;
(b) marine habitats or types of marine habitat;
(c) features of geological or geomorphological interest;
(d) the marine ecosystem as a whole.

This amendment is concerned with placing highly protected marine reserves on
the face of the Act. The protection of â?othe marine ecosystem as a wholeâ?
is the agreed definition of a highly protected marine reserve. The
Government and the front bench of other parties have declared their
commitment to highly protected marine reserves, but do not want a duty in
law placed upon them to create such reserves. This amendment respects that
declaration. Instead, it simply establishes a power to create highly
protected reserves, without any duty to do so being placed on the Secretary
of State.

Highly protected marine reserves are a key tool in the rebuilding of fish
stocks and the repair of seriously damaged marine ecosystems. This amendment
ensures that this tool will exist in law. It can only be used by the
Secretary of State to protect fish stocks within the 6 nautical mile limit,
but its existence in UK law will enable the Government to persuade the EU
that a reform of the Common Fisheries Policy should embrace a similar power
to protect our fish stocks from 6 nautical miles out to 200 nautical miles.
This is a first step to secure this important change to the CFP.

As I say, Amendment 3 only creates a power and not a duty on the Secretary
of State. So, may I ask you to consider placing your name to Amendment 3 on
the Order Paper for Report Stage on 26th October, and that you will be in
the House on that day to vote for Amendment 3.

What bothers me about this is that it gives them the POWER but not a DUTY. In other words they can - but will they? The mere fact that they don't
want it to be a duty suggests to me that they won't bother. If they were seriously aiming to do it, why would they not want it to be a duty? If they
intend to do it then it wouldn't matter whether it's a duty or otherwise. Sounds to me like a typical politicians get-out clause.

In actual fact this kind of thing shouldn't even need to be debated in parliament, it is ALREADY the politicians DUTY to do such things. We are not
talking here about somebody's back garden for christ sake, we're talking about the future of the sea, and with it the future of this planet!! If that
isn't the politicians DUTY then what is?????

Whilst I totally agree with what you have put so well, it is dependant upon an MP following the wishes of his constituents. When did that ever happen ? Let's face it the only good politician is a dead one and would you trust one with such a serious issue ? MP's only get on board with something if there's an angle in it for themselves. Sorry fact I'm afraid.
