Hi Guys. New to the forum. Probably a very old chestnut but what's the thinking about moon phases and the effect on cat activity ?

Been tracking it for 3 years and as yet I see no pattern...Except caught a PB fish the first full moon in sept for the last 3 years

Using eels as an example, so far this season I have caught two five pound fish. One was taken on a full moon (ie. very bright) and the other a new moon (ie.
very dark). That tells me everything I need to know about the effects of the moon !

I pretty much agree with Henry's take on moon phases although I find that later in the season (say July onwards) I find that a rising moon, ie. first two
weeks of a new moon, produces more than a waning moon - don't know why and I doubt there's anything much in it but it's what I've noticed.
Like Henry say's though you can't hang around waiting for the 'right moon' to coincide with the 'right temperature', the 'right cloud cover' etc. before you go catting, - I go anyway regardless of conditions. You ain't gonna catch anything sitting at home! Finally, just to throw a spanner in the works - My UK PB was caught on
a full moon with a clear sky in July and my Euro PB was caught on a full moon with a clear sky in October, - maybe there is something in this moon phase thing
!

Keith,
I find what you (and HH) say very interesting.. I've always been extremely sceptical about this moon phase thingy. I'd been touching the subject with a very successful piker buddy who puts a lotta faith in certain moonphases. I'd also been looking back in my diary and my two (now three) largest cats this season and the largest last year were all caught on a full moon period.
I may almost be converted....

Will only form a pattern on year 4...
First three years constitute a coincidence ![]()

Can anyone explain to me 'HOW' the moon affects freshwater fish (where tides are not a factor) ? By what mechanism does it work ? If we are to assume that there is a massive correlation then all fish should be affected and not just predators. Does the favoured moon-phase also affect humans and cause them to similarly start feeding ? So on these favoured 'moon influenced optimal' feeding times, do we as anglers suddenly get the urge to start scoffing as well ? Of course not. Until hard scientific data is produced that has been rigorously tested to prove that there is a continuous correlation (and not just occasional), I for one will remain a sceptic. We could discuss this topic for a year and still get no agreed concensus. Some will swear by the effects of the moon and others will be sceptical to put it mildly. Each to their own. I would suggest that the biggest factor in fish feeding is the weather and that the biggest factors in us catching them are PMA and confidence. Of course presenting the right baits effectively when the chosen quarry are actually feeding also helps ! Incidentally we all have our own vision of 'the perfect night' weather-wise but I can guarantee that most of us have blanked on a lot of these occasions. For me the perfect night is when I put one on the bank ! As Keith said, not many fish are caught when you are sat at home ! As for patterns, I've noticed that lots of cats get caught at weekends with less during the week ! |

I think my captures came about in early Sept as I always take the same time off work each year at the end of the summer hols when the place gets quiet. Like I
said I write all the details of captures down and see no coincidence in 3 years.
I always have time off around the May banks holidays as well and caught well this year and last, co-incidence? Most likely that and trying hard on my behalf I reckon..... |

just to confuse matters a bit more, with a few exceptions most of my cats have been caught during the hours of darkness (with various moon phases). but the
moon aint always up in the sky at night, sometimes it's up during the day.
